| Obverse description | The fourth portrait effigy of Queen Elizabeth II faces right, wearing the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland Tiara, as designed by Ian Rank-Broadley. The legend 'ELIZABETH II AUSTRALIA 1 DOLLAR' arcs around the upper field, with the designer's initials 'IRB' positioned below the portrait truncation. The obverse design follows the standard Commonwealth convention for this portrait generation. |

The Discover Australia series, launched by the Perth Mint in 2007, used pad printing technology to apply color directly onto the coin surface — a process borrowed from industrial manufacturing that allows detailed polychromatic imagery without the limitations of traditional enameling. Phillip Island, located off the Victorian coast, was included in the series primarily for its penguin colony at Summerland Beach, one of the most visited wildlife sites on the continent.
Pad-printed color on silver coins from this period is vulnerable to wear and surface separation at the edges of the printed zone — a known preservation concern specific to this production method.
