Additional information

Australia's first silver coins — the florin and the shilling — entered circulation in 1910, struck at the Royal Mint's London and Melbourne branches to coincide with the newly federated nation's decision to replace British currency with a distinctly Australian coinage. This 2010 issue marks exactly a century from that point. The original 1910 coins were themselves controversial: the absence of a Latin motto drew criticism from the Catholic Archbishop of Melbourne, who objected publicly to what he saw as an irreligious omission.
