Additional information

Thomas Currie Derrick earned his Victoria Cross at Sattelberg, New Guinea, in November 1943 — single-handedly clearing ten Japanese machine-gun posts in a charge that broke a weeks-long stalemate. He was killed by mortar fire on Tarakan Island in May 1945, just days before the war's end, making him one of the last Australians to die in action before the Japanese surrender. The bridge named for him crosses the Torrens River in Adelaide's western suburbs.
