Additional information

New Zealand's brown kiwi (Apteryx mantelli) is listed as vulnerable, with the wild population sitting around 35,000 birds and declining without active management. The Department of Conservation's kiwi recovery programme, running since 1991, has shifted some island sanctuaries to net population growth — but mainland birds still face predation rates that kill roughly 95% of chicks before adulthood. This coin was issued the same year DOC reported measurable gains from predator-free fencing initiatives on the North Island.

The fourth portrait of Elizabeth II, by Ian Rank-Broadley, was adopted by New Zealand in 1999.
