The "May" privy mark on this Kookaburra dollar was issued as part of the Royal Australian Mint's monthly privy program, a strategy developed in the late 1990s to drive collector demand by fragmenting the Kookaburra series into calendar-based variants. Twelve different privy marks were released across the year, each tied to a specific month and produced in deliberately limited quantities to sustain secondary market interest.
KM#489.2 distinguishes this variant from the base 2000 Kookaburra issue solely by that small stamped privy. The program borrowed directly from techniques pioneered by the Perth Mint's bullion series, which had demonstrated that fractured release schedules reliably converted single-purchase buyers into set completionists.
