Obverse description Right-facing effigy of Queen Elizabeth II wearing the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland tiara, rendered in fine detail with naturalistically styled hair, after the fourth portrait by Ian Rank-Broadley. The truncation of the bust is unadorned, with the engraver's initials 'IRB' incuse below. The peripheral legend reads 'ELIZABETH II' to the left and 'AUSTRALIA 1998' to the right, all in raised Latin characters against a deeply mirrored proof field.

Additional information

Australia's new Parliament House on Capital Hill opened in May 1988 after a decade of construction, replacing the provisional building that had served since 1927. The 1998 issue marks the tenth anniversary of that opening. The building's construction cost ultimately exceeded $1.1 billion AUD, making it one of the most expensive public buildings completed in the Southern Hemisphere at the time.
