Reverse description A highly detailed rendering of the Victoria Cross medal occupies the central field, depicted in full suspension with its characteristic Maltese cross form, the lion statant guardant atop the Royal Crown at centre, and the motto FOR VALOUR inscribed on the central roundel. The ribbon bar and laurel-wreath suspender clasp are shown above the medal. The inscription CAPT N HOWSE VC appears to the left of the suspender and the date 24 JULY 1900 to the right, commemorating the first Australian recipient of the decoration. The legends VICTORIA CROSS arc along the left field and ONE DOLLAR along the right field.
