Obverse description The fourth definitive effigy of Queen Elizabeth II faces right, wearing the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland Tiara, as modelled by sculptor Ian Rank-Broadley. The truncated, draped bust occupies the centre of the field, with the surrounding legend reading ELIZABETH II AUSTRALIA 2001 along the periphery. The engraver's initials IRB appear below the bust truncation.

Reverse description The central device depicts the Rising Sun Badge of the Australian Army in high relief, comprising a sunburst of radiating rays surmounted by the Imperial Crown, with a scrolled banner bearing the inscriptions THE ARMY and AUSTRALIAN. The commemorative dates 1901 - 2001 appear below the badge, flanked by the Canberra mint mark C to the left. The arc legend CENTENARY OF THE ARMY curves along the upper periphery, while the denomination ONE DOLLAR is inscribed along the lower periphery in large block lettering.
