| Reverse description | Finely detailed naturalistic depiction of an adult Little Spotted Kiwi (Apteryx owenii) standing prominently in the centre field, accompanied by a smaller chick at its feet, both rendered amid native New Zealand ferns and ground vegetation. The engraving captures the characteristic long bill, rounded body, and coarse plumage of the species with exceptional detail. The legend 'ONE DOLLAR' arcs along the upper border, while 'LITTLE SPOTTED KIWI Apteryx owenii' curves along the lower border in a combination of uppercase and italic script. |

New Zealand Post, rather than the Reserve Bank of New Zealand, has issued commemorative coins as legal tender since the 1990s under a licensing arrangement — a distinction that matters, since these pieces are produced for collectors and never enter circulation. The black nickel finish on this issue is an electroplating process applied over the .999 silver substrate, a technique that became fashionable in the 2010s among Commonwealth mints competing for the novelty collector market.
Apteryx owenii, the Little Spotted Kiwi, is the smallest of the five kiwi species and was extirpated from the mainland; the surviving wild population exists almost entirely on Kapiti Island following predator eradication efforts begun in the late 19th century.
