Issued to mark the 90th anniversary of the Gallipoli landings, this coin appeared in a year when the ANZAC centenary machinery was already beginning to spin up across both New Zealand and Australia — 2005 saw record attendance at dawn services in Gallipoli itself, with over 20,000 people present at Chunuk Bair and Anzac Cove. The New Zealand mint had been producing ANZAC commemoratives with increasing frequency since the 1990s, reflecting a broader cultural shift in how both nations framed the campaign: less as a military defeat, more as a foundational national myth.
