Obverse description The fourth crowned effigy of Queen Elizabeth II faces right, wearing the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland Tiara. The portrait, engraved by Ian Rank-Broadley, is rendered in high relief against a polished field. The surrounding legend reads ELIZABETH II AUSTRALIA 2017 1 DOLLAR, with the engraver's initials IRB appearing below the truncation of the bust.

Reverse description The reverse features a pad-printed polychrome design centred on the uppercase letter T, rendered in bold stylised form, with which a Thylacine (Tasmanian Tiger) playfully interacts. The extinct marsupial is depicted in a naturalistic yet animated pose, its distinctive striped markings faithfully rendered in colour. The letter T appears prominently as the dominant design element, with the overall composition framed against a lightly detailed background field.
