Issued to mark Elizabeth II's 80th birthday in April 2006, this New Zealand dollar was part of a broader Commonwealth pattern of celebratory coinage that year — Australia, Canada, and several smaller territories produced parallel issues. New Zealand's version used the existing aluminium bronze circulation format rather than a dedicated precious metal strike, placing it firmly in the commemorative-but-spendable category that the Reserve Bank favored throughout the early 2000s. Ian Rank-Broadley's fourth portrait, introduced across New Zealand coinage in 1999, appears here without modification.
