Australia's postal history traces back to 1809, when the first official postal arrangements were established in the colony of New South Wales — making 2009 the bicentenary this coin commemorates. For most of the nineteenth century, postage rates were complicated by the federation of separate colonial systems, each running its own stamps and accounting. A single unified Australian Post Office did not emerge until Federation itself in 1901.
The aluminium bronze alloy used here is the same composition Australia has struck its dollar circulation coinage in since 1984.
