Reverse description Central device depicts a voyageur canoe paddled by two figures, rendered in the classic design originally conceived by Emanuel Hahn, here engraved by Terry Smith. A rocky islet with a wind-swept pine tree rises in the centre background, with stylised rays suggesting the northern sky or aurora borealis. The legend CANADA arcs along the upper field, while DOLLAR curves along the lower field, with the date centred between them. A beaded border frames the entire composition, and the engraver's initials are visible at lower left in the field.

Additional information

The "small portrait" designation on this issue refers to a deliberate mid-series correction: the Machin effigy introduced on Canadian coinage in 1965 was initially reproduced at a scale deemed too large relative to the coin's field, and a reduced version was phased in. The distinction matters to variety collectors because both portrait sizes circulated simultaneously for a period, making date-and-portrait combinations the primary sorting criterion within the series.
