Additional information

New Zealand issued this dollar to mark the 1983 royal tour, during which Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip visited in late January and February — the same tour that coincided with a period of significant economic strain, with New Zealand's wool and agricultural export prices near post-war lows and the Muldoon government's wage and price freeze still in effect. Commemorative coinage was one of the few areas of public expenditure that generated no political controversy.

KM#52 uses the Arnold Machin second portrait, introduced on New Zealand coinage in 1965.
