Obverse lettering ELIZABETH II COOK ISLANDS · ONE DOLLAR 2005 ·
Reverse description The reverse reproduces the design of the famous 1813 New South Wales Holey Dollar, the first currency issued in colonial Australia. The broad annular field displays a draped classical figure in high relief at the upper center, derived from the original Spanish colonial eight-real host coin. The outer legend reads 'CAROLUS · III · DEI · GRATIA' arching around the full circumference, while 'NEW SOUTH WALES' and the date '1813' appear on the inner ring surrounding the central void, with '1788' — the year of European settlement — displayed prominently at the base. A beaded inner border frames the central hole, faithfully recalling the counterstamped appearance of the original holey dollar.
