Calgary's centennial fell in 1975, marking a hundred years since the North-West Mounted Police established Fort Calgary at the confluence of the Bow and Elbow Rivers in 1875. The commemorative dollar was struck in .500 fine silver — the same alloy Canada had used for circulation dollars since 1967, and retained here partly to keep production costs manageable during a period of rising silver prices.
The RC-804a designation distinguishes this from the proof issue; collectors should note the two strikes differ in finish and mintage, not just surface quality.
