Dragon boat racing traces its origins to ancient southern China, where ritual paddling competitions were tied to the Duanwu Festival and the legend of the poet Qu Yuan, who drowned himself in 278 BC in protest of political corruption. The sport arrived in Fiji through the country's substantial Indo-Fijian and Chinese-Fijian communities, and has grown into a genuine fixture on the Suva waterfront calendar.
