| Reverse description | Rectangular proof planchet bearing a highly detailed engraved scene inspired by Gustave Doré's illustrations for Dante Alighieri's Divine Comedy, rendered in antiqued gold-toned relief. The composition depicts a towering, multi-figured infernal scene with intertwined souls rising along the left portion of the field, while two smaller figures — interpreted as Dante and his guide — stand to the lower right in a luminous void. The scene is executed with exceptional intricacy, capturing the dramatic chiaroscuro and Gothic grandeur characteristic of Doré's celebrated 19th-century engravings. This tile constitutes the 12th panel of a 24-part series forming a composite artwork when assembled. A small engraver's signature is visible in the lower right corner of the field. |
