Chicoutimi's Carnaval-Souvenir was one of Quebec's most ambitious regional winter festivals, running through the late twentieth century as a deliberate counterpart to Quebec City's better-known Carnaval. These dollar tokens functioned as genuine local trade currency during festival week, accepted by participating merchants — a practice with roots in Depression-era scrip that Quebec winter carnivals quietly kept alive long after the economic necessity had passed.
