| Obverse description | The central field features a highly detailed relief depiction of a dinosaur skeleton embedded in rocky strata, rendered as if partially excavated, occupying the lower and central portion of the coin. In the upper field, a raised circular cartouche bears the Public Seal of Niue — an ornate crowned coat of arms flanked by crossed implements and laurel-like foliage — with the legend PUBLIC SEAL OF NIUE above and ATUA NIUE TUKULAGI below within the cartouche. Niue has operated as a prolific bullion and collector coin issuing platform since the early 2000s, licensing its monetary authority to overseas minting operations — primarily the New Zealand Mint — to produce themed series with no meaningful circulation intent. The arrangement is fiscally useful for a territory of roughly 1,500 people with limited independent revenue streams.
Stegosaurus fossils were first formally described by Othniel Charles Marsh in 1877 from Morrison Formation deposits in Colorado, making it one of the earlier dinosaurs systematically documented during the American "Bone Wars."
