Additional information

New Zealand's "fuller portrait" of Charles III — developed by sculptor Martin Jennings and adopted by several Commonwealth realms from 2023 onward — corrects the longstanding convention of alternating the monarch's facing direction with each reign. Charles faces left, as Elizabeth II did, breaking the heads-or-tails rotation that had held since the 1800s. The cave taniwha is a figure from Māori oral tradition associated with specific waterways and subterranean spaces, though individual iwi hold distinct accounts that resist any single canonical version.
