Niue has become one of the Pacific's most prolific licensing vehicles for commemorative silver, issuing coins under agreements that generate royalty revenue for a territory of roughly 1,500 people who use the New Zealand dollar in daily commerce. The Darwin connection here is the 1831–1836 HMS Beagle survey voyage, during which Darwin's observations in the Galápagos Islands — particularly the variation in finch beak morphology across islands — laid groundwork that would not reach publication until On the Origin of Species in 1859, more than two decades later.
