Obverse description The first effigy of King Charles III, designed by Dominic Tatcher, depicted as a bare-headed, draped bust in left-facing profile occupying the central field. The portrait captures fine detail in the hair and collar. The circumferential legend reads 'CHARLES III AUSTRALIA' arcing across the upper field, while the denomination '1 DOLLAR' appears along the lower arc, flanked by raised dot separators. The engraver's initials 'DT' appear in small characters beneath the truncation of the bust.

Additional information

The Welcome Stranger, found near Moliagul in Victoria in February 1869 by John Deason and Richard Oates, weighed 2,316 troy ounces gross and remains the largest alluvial gold nugget ever recorded. It was too large to fit on the assay office scales and had to be broken into three pieces before it could be weighed. Deason and Oates received £9,381 for it — a fraction of its true value, by most assessments of the period's gold price.

Perth Mint's Australian Nugget series has used the Welcome Stranger as a recurring subject since the series' inception, though this 2026 issue introduces Charles III's first portrait under Jody Clark's effigy as adopted by the Royal Australian Mint and licensed minting partners.
