The "Pillar Dollar" design references the Spanish milled dollar — the 8 reales struck at New World mints from the 1730s onward — which circulated so widely across the Pacific that it became the dominant trade coin in early colonial Australia. When no official British coinage reached the colony in sufficient quantities, Spanish dollars were literally countermarked and cut to manufacture local currency. This piece acknowledges that lineage directly.
Charles III's first portrait by Martin Jennings debuted across Commonwealth coinage in 2023, replacing the fifth Maklouf-derived effigy of Elizabeth II.
