Additional information

The green emu (Dromaius novaehollandiae baudinianus) from Kangaroo Island was hunted to extinction by the early 1820s, within decades of European contact. The Ngana Nyitting — "cold country" in the Ngarrindjeri language — refers to the southern coastal regions where this subspecies persisted longest. Its appearance on a circulating dollar denomination is unusual; most Australian extinct-fauna commemoratives are confined to precious-metal collector issues well outside general circulation budgets.
