Reverse description A detailed colour-printed depiction of Edoras, the fictional city and capital of Rohan from Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings film trilogy, dominates the central field of the coin. The great hall of Meduseld is rendered in fine relief and vivid colour, set against a painted sky with clouds and distant mountains, enclosed within an ornate Celtic knotwork border. The arc legend THE RETURN OF THE KING · 20TH ANNIVERSARY surrounds the upper field, while ONE DOLLAR is inscribed along the lower arc. The gold-plated rim frames the entire composition, and a facsimile signature of the designer appears in the lower central field beneath the image.

Additional information

Edoras is a fictional location — the capital of Rohan in Tolkien's Middle-earth — and its appearance on a New Zealand legal tender coin reflects the country's ongoing licensing arrangement with Warner Bros. following the filming of Peter Jackson's trilogy in New Zealand locations during the early 2000s. The gold-plated silver format is a deliberate nod to the gilded halls of Meduseld, the mead-hall that dominates the Edoras set built on Mount Sunday in the Rangitata Valley, Canterbury.
