New Zealand's commemorative program for the second Avatar film arrived well after the movie's December 2022 theatrical release, tying the coin to a production that had spent over a decade in development hell following the original 2009 film. The "Way of Water" subtitle references the Na'vi clan central to the sequel's ocean-based narrative — a deliberate thematic shift from the jungle setting of the first installment.
This is also among the earliest New Zealand issues to carry the first portrait of Charles III, following his accession in September 2022.
