The Ampelmännchen — the stubby, hat-wearing pedestrian signal figure originating in East German traffic design in 1961 — became a minor cultural flashpoint after reunification, when western-standard signals briefly replaced it across former DDR cities before public backlash forced its reinstatement. The "Double AMPELMANN™" privy mark references both the green walking and red standing variants. Perth Mint privy-marked Kookaburra issues are struck in strictly limited numbers, and the trademark symbol on the privy indicates a licensed arrangement with AMPELMANN GmbH, the Berlin company that has commercially managed the figure since the 1990s.
