| Additional information |
Palau gained its monetary issuing rights almost immediately after independence in 1994, and quickly became one of the most prolific producers of novelty bullion and collector coinage in the Pacific. This palladium essai — a trial or test strike, not produced for circulation — dates from a period when palladium was trading at a fraction of platinum prices, making experimental strikes in the metal commercially viable for small-island minting programs operating through European contract mints.
Essais of this type rarely appear in dealer inventory; most were retained by the issuing authority or the striking mint as production records.
