Palau has issued an extraordinary volume of small-format gold and silver wildlife pieces since the 1990s, most produced by the Bald Eagle Mint or foreign contract facilities rather than any domestic mint — Palau has none. This blue-ringed octopus issue is part of a broader marine life series capitalizing on the country's identity as a premier Pacific dive destination, with pieces sold almost entirely to collector markets abroad rather than circulating domestically.
The blue-ringed octopus itself carries enough tetrodotoxin to kill 26 adults, with no antivenom in existence.
