Obverse description A high-relief bust portrait of Crispus Attucks, the African American patriot and first martyr of the American Revolution, facing three-quarters to the right, occupying the central field. The legend LIBERTY arcs along the upper rim, while IN GOD WE TRUST appears in two lines to the left of the portrait. The inscription CRISPUS ATTUCKS / 1723-1770 is positioned to the right of the effigy, with the San Francisco Mint mark S below. The date 1998 appears in the lower exergue.
