Obverse description Left-facing draped bust of James Madison, fourth President of the United States and principal author of the Bill of Rights, rendered in high relief with finely detailed period costume including a ruffled cravat and coat. The legend LIBERTY appears to the right of the effigy in the upper field, with the sitter's name JAMES MADISON inscribed below it. The motto IN GOD WE TRUST and the date 1993 are incused along the lower border. Designer initials WJK and TDR appear in small lettering near the truncation of the bust.
