Batu Khan founded the Golden Horde in the 1240s after leading the Mongol invasion that devastated Kievan Rus, Poland, and Hungary — one of the most destructive military campaigns in medieval European history. Palau has issued dozens of these silver-plated copper collector pieces under licensing arrangements, pairing its Pacific island sovereignty with historical figures that have no geographic connection to it whatsoever.
