Additional information

Liberia's Central Bank issued a wave of celebrity and sports commemoratives throughout the 1990s under licensing arrangements that had little to do with Liberian monetary policy and everything to do with the international novelty coin market. This piece is one of them. Ruth died in 1948, and his estate's licensing rights have been commercially active ever since — this coin exists because those rights were available, not because Liberia had any particular connection to baseball.

The gold plating on the copper-nickel planchet adds negligible precious metal value. Collectors should know the KM#131 designation covers the unplated version; the 'a' suffix distinguishes this variant.
