Additional information

Sierra Leone's late-1990s dollar series was aimed squarely at the collector market, issued by the government as a revenue mechanism during a period when the country was deep in civil war. The Royal Mint and several private minting houses produced commemorative coinage on Sierra Leone's behalf throughout this decade, with the actual designs having no particular connection to Sierra Leonean history or culture.

The armillary sphere as a subject was recycled across multiple issuing authorities during the same period — a licensing arrangement rather than a commission.
