Reverse description A finely detailed relief of an Ankylosaurus is depicted in left profile, its heavily armored body covered with rows of osteoderms and lateral spikes, and its characteristic club tail raised and curving prominently upward. The dinosaur is shown in a low, grounded stance atop a rocky surface, conveying naturalistic detail. The inscription 'PRESERVE PLANET EARTH' arcs along the upper periphery, while the species name 'ANKYLOSAURUS' appears in the upper field. The denomination '$1' is inscribed at the base of the design in the exergual area.

Additional information

Eritrea declared independence from Ethiopia in May 1993 following a UN-supervised referendum, and this coin was struck almost immediately as part of the new nation's first coinage series — a direct assertion of sovereign currency before the country had even established its central bank infrastructure. The dinosaur theme was a deliberate export decision; these issues were produced primarily for the collector market, not domestic circulation, and Eritrea used the licensing of popular subjects to generate foreign exchange during a period of acute economic fragility.
