Additional information

The 2021 redesign ended a 35-year run of John Mercanti's heraldic eagle reverse, making it the first reverse change in the series' history. The switch was partly driven by anti-counterfeiting concerns — the Mint introduced edge reeding variations and revised surface finishes to differentiate bullion, proof, and burnished strikes more clearly than the old design allowed.

Emily Damstra designed the new reverse, her first circulating-format U.S. coinage work. The 2021 Type 2 issue, struck only in the latter part of that year, carries a notably short production window.
