Additional information

Maryland's innovation dollar honors the Hubble Space Telescope, developed at the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory and managed through NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt. When Hubble launched in 1990, a flawed primary mirror rendered it effectively useless until a 1993 servicing mission corrected the optics — one of the more embarrassing and then triumphant episodes in NASA history. The American Innovation dollar series itself was authorized under the American Innovation $1 Coin Act of 2018, producing four coins per year through 2032 with no legal tender circulation mandate driving production.
