| Obverse description | The obverse is printed in black on white cotton paper and is dominated by a large central vignette of the Niagara Suspension Bridge spanning a river gorge, flanked on the left by a classical allegorical vignette of a figure with a horse. Large numeral "1" counters appear in each corner, with a small portrait medallion of a male figure at the lower right. The text "THE NIAGARA Suspension Bridge" appears in bold lettering across the centre, with the promise to pay "ONE DOLLAR" and the place of issue "QUEENSTON" inscribed below in script and letterpress, dated 1st October 1840, with manuscript cashier and president signatures at the foot. |
