Obverse description Printed in black over a salmon-pink guilloche underprint, the obverse carries an elaborate decorative border enclosing a central vignette of figures navigating a river by canoe through a wooded landscape. An oval portrait of a young woman is set within a decorative frame at left, balanced by a bearded male portrait at right; the legend "DOMINION OF CANADA" appears in bold gothic lettering across the top, with "WILL PAY TO THE BEARER ONE DOLLAR" inscribed in the lower central field above the manuscript signatures of the Minister of Finance and Deputy Minister. Date and place of issue, "OTTAWA, MARCH 31, 1898", complete the face, with the denomination "ONE DOLLAR" repeated in the lower margin.

"DOMINION OF CANADA" curves in an arc above the central vignette, and "DOLLAR ONE DOLLAR" runs along the lower margin with the numeral "1" repeated at each corner.
