| Obverse description | Left-facing draped bust of Liberty, her flowing hair elaborately coiffed and adorned with a laurel sprig and a headband inscribed LIBERTY. Thirteen six-pointed stars are arranged in an arc around the left and right periphery of the field. The motto E PLURIBUS UNUM curves along the upper legend, and the date 1879 appears in the exergue below the portrait. The design is rendered in high relief with fine engraving characteristic of William Barber's work, all within a beaded border. |
