The Dominion of Canada's 1878 dollar note was produced at a critical juncture in Canadian monetary policy — the federal government had been issuing its own Dominion Notes since 1870 precisely to displace the chartered banks' own circulation and assert central control over the lower denominations. The British American Bank Note Company, founded in Montreal just four years earlier through a merger of two competing security printers, was still establishing itself as the dominant Canadian security printer when this note was produced.
Pick 17 is notably scarce. The series had a short active life before design revisions followed, and surviving circulated examples often show significant wear through the centre fold — a known weakness of this issue's handling pattern.
