Obverse description The obverse is executed in dark intaglio engraving on a light ground, with the bank title ST. STEPHENS BANK in large letters across the centre and the inscription PROVINCE OF NEW BRUNSWICK along the upper border. A central vignette occupies the upper portion, illustrating a dramatic maritime scene of sailors laboring in a storm-tossed boat, rendered in fine line engraving. To the lower left is an oval portrait vignette of a gentleman in formal attire, while a classical female figure appears at the lower right; guilloche rosettes bearing the numeral 1 anchor both upper corners.
