| Obverse description | The obverse presents a central vignette of a suspension bridge over a river gorge — almost certainly the Niagara Railway Suspension Bridge — flanked on the left by a smaller vignette of a classical building set in a landscape and on the right by a seated allegorical female figure with an anchor. The bold bank title THE BANK OF CLIFTON is printed in large serif letterpress across the centre, with the denomination ONE DOLLAR rendered in a large red overprint. A lathe-work guilloche rosette bearing the numeral 1 appears in the upper-left counter, with a matching numeral 1 panel at upper right, and the note carries manuscript signatures and serial number below the main text block. |
