Obverse description The annular field features the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA arched along the upper rim and the date 1852 at the lower rim, both in raised Latin letters. A continuous wavy or scalloped line encircles the central round perforation, separating the inscriptions from the void. The outer border is defined by a raised rim with fine dentilation. The design is entirely typographic and ornamental, with no figural effigy, reflecting the experimental holed-coin format proposed for a practical small gold dollar.
