| Reverse description | A naturalistic rendering of a cocoa branch (Theobroma cacao) dominates the left and lower portions of the field, displaying multiple cocoa pods clustered along the stem in high relief. To the right of the branch, the denomination numeral '1' appears prominently above the inscription 'DOBRA' in bold lettering. The FAO slogan 'AUMENTEMOS A PRODUÇÃO' (Increase Production) curves along the outer periphery from lower left to upper right, referencing the FAO cash crops commemorative series. |

São Tomé and Príncipe gained independence from Portugal in July 1975, and this 1977 issue was struck as part of the FAO's broader program encouraging newly independent nations to promote agricultural self-sufficiency through commemorative coinage. The archipelago's economy was almost entirely dependent on cocoa at the time — a monoculture inherited from Portuguese plantation agriculture that left the new state acutely vulnerable to commodity price swings.
The FAO series for São Tomé ran across several denominations in this period, all produced to draw attention to diversification away from cocoa dependency.
