Disney Dollars were introduced in 1987 as a park-exclusive scrip redeemable at face value throughout Disney properties. The program was partly a revenue mechanism — a percentage of notes sold were never redeemed, generating float income — and partly a souvenir play, since collectors routinely pulled them from circulation immediately.
The 1990 series was printed by the American Banknote Corporation, which also handled legitimate government currency work. ABNCo's involvement gave the notes genuine security printing characteristics, including fine-line intaglio work uncommon in commercial scrip of the period.
Disney retired the program entirely in May 2016.
