| Obverse description | Central field bearing the Islamic profession of faith (shahada) arranged in four horizontal lines of Kufic script: 'There is no god but Allah alone, He has no partner.' Surrounding the central legend, a marginal inscription in the field naming the mint city of Basra and the regnal year of issue. The flan is irregularly shaped, characteristic of hammered Abbasid silver coinage, with the legends boldly struck in angular Kufic lettering. |
