Obverse description Roughly square flan with a beaded border framing the entire field. The obverse bears a three-line Arabic inscription in Kufic-influenced script reading the Shahada: 'There is no god but God, Muhammad is the Messenger of God.' The lettering is bold and deeply struck, characteristic of Hafsid hammered silver coinage, with the lines of text filling the available field in a dense, interlocking arrangement typical of North African Islamic dirhams of the period.
